It is the main maternity hospital, children's hospital and blood donation centre in Cork City. The hospital was originally the Workhouse for Cork city, constructed by the Poor Law Guardians in 1841; the architect was George Wilkinson, who was architect to the Poor Law Commissioners in Ireland from 1839 until 1855.〔 *〕 After a number of extensions to the Workhouse, its name was changed to the Cork District Hospital in 1898. It later became the Cork County Home and Hospital.
